Marking Time Marking Space
Marking Time Marking Space is an on-going project that uses my family archive to investigate what stories aren’t told or accounted for. Much of this work began with a journey that I took in 2017 to re-enact the 1844 trip my great-great-great-great-great grandfather took to Europe with his daughter. Drawing upon the research I’ve performed for this project—both into my own family history and the history of the United States and Europe in the mid-nineteenth century—this project is framed by questions examining individual versus collective memory, as well as the potential violence and erasures enacted through the writing and recording of history. I am also investigating the idea of the “boundary”— geographical, political, cultural and personal.
